About this Activity

Also known as international bypass fraud, SIMBox fraud involves rerouting international phone traffic outside regulated pathways and redirecting it as local calls in the destination country. This type of fraud has a significant global impact on cellular networks, causing estimated annual losses of $3.11 billion and posing serious risks to state security. However, combating SIMBox fraud remains a major challenge for operators, as fraudsters continually refine their techniques, which are often insufficiently considered in the design and evaluation of detection methods.
In November 2024, we organized a hackathon at the University of Yaoundé I (UY1) focused on the use of FraudZen, a tool we developed for fraud detection. The event attracted approximately 62 participants, who worked on innovative approaches to enhance FraudZen's capabilities and tackle this pressing issue.
